The ideal candidate will be striving for holiness by continuing to grow spiritually and intellectually in their orthodox Roman Catholic formation (Byzantine, Lithuanian, or other rites in union with Roman Catholicism included), and desire to lead a community of peers to knowing and loving Jesus Christ. They should be willing to step out of their comfort zone frequently in order to lead others in faith and morals and often be the first welcoming contact for young adults in a parish or city. No missionary can succeed without meeting people where they are at and patiently loving them. They also must have some affinity towards sports or enough familiarity to be confident in planning and leading leagues with some training. They will also need to be outgoing towards new people, as the position requires a lot of social networking and the creation of a hospitable environment requires good conversational skills. They must also be self-motivated and good at managing their time. All potential candidates will embody the CYAS values: hospitable outreach, integrity and Catholic orthodoxy.

Interpersonal skills are critical for managing/recruiting a team of volunteers and players/captains for leagues, socials events, and formation opportunities
100% Missionary minded (all work should have eternal salvation at the forefront) – missionary work is a vocation/calling, which means it permeates to all aspects of life, unlike non-missionary jobs. This is why the position requires more than 50 hours, but a good portion of those hours should be in fun social settings that hardly seem like labor.
A good Catholic theology formation and a passion for sharing/teaching the Catholic faith

Position Summary The outreach coordinator missionary serves a parish, or a diocese region, in the efforts to evangelize 18-39 year olds. Every missionary coordinator plans and coordinates recreational sports leagues (basketball, ultimate, volleyball, wiffleball, etc.) and fun social events for new participant engagement. Then, they personally invite and encourage participants to get involved in Bible studies, retreats and mission trips, which they also plan/coordinate.
Outreach coordinators will work in a team of 2-4 missionaries and report to the National Program Director. They are encouraged to live with at least one missionary of the same gender, and potentially a couple of their disciples, with intentional prayer and community among them. They will also work closely in relationship with the CYAS partner they represent to ensure a growing partnership and success for both CYAS and their sponsoring partner.
Approximation of weekly time breakdown:
10% coordinating sports leagues
20% Bible studies & one-on-one mentorship
40% administration, planning and marketing (building the community)
20% networking for recruitment and growing participation in all areas
10% fundraising maintenance or growth (post fundraising/training period)
Event planning & co-ordination: Every missionary should plan at minimum 6 sports leagues and 6-12 social events annually (training and support is provided)
Formation planning: Every missionary will lead at least one Bible study and mentor at least two disciples, plan 1-2 retreats a year, and work with a region on planning a mission trip or a pilgrimage for young adults (training and support is provided)
Recruitment: Every missionary must work diligently at inviting and encouraging peers to get involved in outreach, formation and volunteer opportunities
Marketing: Event planning requires a good marketing strategy. CYAS provides tools and systems for effective social media and email marketing, but our staff are required to manage the process. An eye for detail and ability to be objective in marketing is critical to its success.
Coordinating efforts with diocesan/parish personnel, including reporting to the local Bishop/Pastor and/or his representatives and work hard to explain and understand the relational evangelization vision of CYAS in the Church.
Fundraising one's own income and maintaining good report with mission partners (training is provided, and the first 9 weeks of the position are dedicated to building a livable income) - see below compensation section for further details
Need for CYAS
We model a radical Catholic view in practice, which is not radical at all in theology. Evangelization requires us to “meet people where they are at.” Community, or social life, is not only necessary, but is this first step for evangelization, yet it is often overlooked or devalued in our intellect heavy tradition. Cardinal Ratzinger and Sherry Wedell both give a framework for the path to discipleship along the lines of: 1- Trust & Curiosity – Pre-evangelization 2 – Initial Catechesis (or discipleship) and finally 3 – Perfected Catechesis. CYAS excels in stages 1 & 2 and leaves our partners, often parishes, to continue investing in stage 3.
Did you know that 80% of young adults will leave the Catholic faith before they turn 23? Pew Research estimates that may actually be 94% for millennials. And, less than 5% of those that leave will return, and stay, for marriage or baptism. This is a crises demanding urgent attention.

CYAS is a Denver based, young adult recreational sports outreach. Our mission is to build a community of hospitable outreach through recreational sports and socials that lead to a path of discipleship in Bible studies, retreats, and mission trips. We use sports and socials as the draw, and leverage the community from that, to invite participants into a deeper life in union with Jesus Christ. Compensation Employees of CYAS are missionaries, which means they fundraise their personal income in order to further the mission. CYAS will internally train all missionaries on how to build an income producing support team from friends, family and referrals. The first nine weeks are set aside strictly for building this support team, which will sustain the missionaries in their work with CYAS. Support team building is performed remotely near the missionary's home base.
During this initial trainee/fundraising season, missionaries will have the opportunity to earn significant bonuses towards achieving their income goals as well as a small stipend for finishing the first week of training. Missionaries are held accountable to fundraising goals based on their personal budget needs by an experienced CYAS MPD coach. Missionaries are expected to raise $20k-$60k/year in personal income support.
Missionaries will also be offered, either a free rent situation provided by our partners, or a rent subsidy, if they choose to live in an approved housing situation with other missionaries and participants after their initial fundraising/trainee period.
