Position Available:  Instructional Technologist

Position Reports to:  Senior Instructional Designer and Technologist

Department:  Academic Affairs

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

Schedule:  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday; On-call required several evenings and alternating weekends throughout the month with occasional evenings or weekends, as required.

The Instructional Technologist, a key member of Franciscan’s eLearning Support Team, reports to the Senior Instructional Designer and Technologist and works closely with Information Technology Services to support students, faculty, and staff in implementing and using Blackboard and other instructional technology tools.  The Instructional Technologist is also responsible for systems administration of Blackboard and related tools including LTI integrations, basic SQL reporting, and some script writing.




  1. Provide excellent, compassionate support to students and faculty using Blackboard and other eLearning tools in-person, by telephone, email, web conferencing, and screen sharing.


  1. Manage day-to-day Blackboard administrative tasks such as creating courses, modifying enrollments, creating organizations, adding system announcements, etc.


  1. Troubleshoot and maintain Blackboard Learning Management System by researching and solving technical issues; updating, testing, and implementing LTI integrations and updates; working with Blackboard technical support to solve problems; and managing storage and utilization of system.


  1. Collaborate with Information Technology staff on LDAP, Student Information System integration, and technical support.


  1. Optimize and expand functionality of current technologies and research additional tools that could enhance the students’ learning and faculty teaching experience.


  1. Write and maintain web-based and Python scripts and SQL to exchange data and automate processes related to Blackboard and other instructional tools.

Work Experience


  • 1-2 years of experience using and providing eLearning support to university students and faculty in use of eLearning tools or equivalent experience.
  • Experience and expertise in using and supporting learning management system (Blackboard preferred), web video conferencing (Collaborate and Zoom preferred), video recording and editing (Adobe and VidGrid preferred), and experience supporting computer and video hardware, peripherals (i.e., web cams), and both Mac and Windows operating systems.


Work Experience (continued)


  • Experience supporting web browsers and mobile (Android and iOS) devices and their interface with 3rd party applications.
  • Evidence of understanding of current and emerging technologies and ability and passion to quickly learn new technologies used for collaboration, teaching, and learning.
  • Experience managing server administration, writing simple scripts, REST integrations, and testing applications a plus.
  • Experience in instructional design, graphic design, web design, multimedia design, and network technology a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in and passion for working collaboratively with diverse university students and faculty members in a variety of disciplines.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, but a combination of education and experience will be considered.


Technical Skills

  • Demonstrated excellence in and passion for supporting students and faculty using Blackboard Learn and other eLearning tools in higher education.
  • Demonstrated excellence in and passion for supporting students and faculty using video recording and editing equipment as well as virtual classroom environments such as Zoom.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and basic competency in, web and computer programming using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, Python, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated excellence in and passion for using and supporting applications for creating engaging instructional materials including MS Office, Adobe Suite, and the ability to quickly learn new applications as needed.

  • Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • On-call required several evenings and alternating weekends throughout the month.
