POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Career Services directs Franciscan University’s services and programs for students and alumni related to career exploration, job- and internship-searches, and the development of career competencies. The Director plays a key leadership role in Franciscan University’s institutional-wide efforts to promote a culture of personal vocation where students, staff, and faculty ask and begin to answer the question “What is God calling me to do?” and become more and more capable of continually discerning and responding to that call, both while they are at Franciscan University and throughout their life.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop, direct, promote, measure, and assess services and programs for students and alumni that promote career exploration and self-understanding, including but not limited to individual counseling, assessments, print and online resources, referrals, coaching/mentoring, networking, and events.
2. Develop, direct, promote, measure, and assess services and programs that assist students and alumni with researching and applying for internships and jobs, including but not limited to use of online resources such as Handshake and LinkedIn, resume and cover letter preparation, and interview preparation.
3. Identify, promote, and assess internship opportunities for students. Assist faculty, supervisors, coaches, advisors, and others to help students to develop career competencies through academic coursework, field experiences and internships, student and leadership positions, and other experiential learning opportunities.
4. Provide career counseling and coaching to individual students and alumni.
5. Provide overall leadership and management for the University’s First Destination Survey.
6. Serve as the University subject-matter expert for best practices in student career exploration and preparation, internships, and employment trends.
7. Administer department within allocated budget, and in accord with University principles and policies, industry best practices, and federal and state regulations.
8. Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with employers, alumni, faculty, other University departments, advisory boards, and the University administration.
9. Recruit, train, supervise, evaluate, and motivate a staff including exempt and non-exempt employees, graduate assistants, and student employees.

REQUIREMENTS

Must understand, support, and embrace the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville and possess the following:

Work Experience

• 5 years experience in college/university career services, corporate recruiting, human resources, career development, or comparable experience.
• 3-5 years of progressively responsible leadership and supervisory experience.

• Written and Verbal Communication: Clearly and comfortably expresses one’s views and thoughts to different listeners/audiences. Presents effectively in multiple settings; one-on-one, small/large groups, peers, staff, and managers. Knows when to use written communications instead of verbal communications.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in business, educational administration, counseling, college student personnel, or related field strongly preferred.

• Certification as a Global Career Development Facilitator is helpful.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency or experience in web-based career services applications including Handshake and Pathway U.
• Proficiency in standard desktop software applications (e-mail, MS Word, and MS Excel, etc.)
• Proficiency in virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom).
• Proficiency in creating and implementing print and electronic marketing materials.

Workplace Factors

• Some evenings and weekends required.
