Director of Liturgical Music

St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, a vibrant parish of over 1800 families in scenic Cedarburg Wisconsin, just 20 miles north of Milwaukee, is seeking a talented, dynamic, deeply faith-filled individual to lead its music ministry. The parish has a deep faith history dating back to the 1800's that continues today. Our strong music program has always been one of the gemstones among our many ministries and we are seeking a talented individual to continue that tradition. This position oversees the entire liturgical music program with major responsibilities including the following:

 Duties:

  • Serve as primary organist and pianist for the parish
  • Plan and select liturgical choral/handbell music for the entire liturgical year
  • Direct adult choir weekly from September to June
  • Direct Youth Choir
  • Schedule rehearsals with cantors for weekend liturgies as needed
  • Work with lector coordinator for all liturgies
  • Responsible for planning, rehearsing, and playing at weekly school Mass on Fridays
  • Engage instrumentalists for special liturgies such as Christmas and Easter
  • Meet with wedding couples to advise on music selections
  • Funeral planning
  • Schedule tunings and other maintenance of parish musical instruments
  • Manage parish hymnal program
  • Attend all staff meetings scheduled by the pastor
  • Attend monthly Prayer and Worship Committee meetings
  • Prepare annual music and annual liturgy budgets
  • Keep copyright licenses up to date
  • Keep abreast of current developments in music and liturgy, integrating change where needed and in collaboration with the pastor
  • Maintain ethics and confidentiality standards at all times
  • Other duties as assigned 

Ideal Qualifications

  • Minimum-Bachelor’s Degree (Masters Preferred) in Liturgical Music, applied organ & choral.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in liturgical music program management preferred
  • Proficient in organ, piano, and choir direction with both adults and children
  • Experience with hand bells a plus
  • Must be knowledgeable of church music literature in all forms and style for the congregation, choirs (adult, teen and children), vocalists and instrumentalists
  • Proficient in liturgical principals of the Catholic Church, including a thorough understanding of the musical, liturgical and pastoral judgements which must be made in selecting music for liturgy
  • This position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • This position requires exceptional organizational skills in order to manage the numerous schedules and moving parts that are entailed in this position
  • Proficient computer skills in e-mail, and also Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have a basic working knowledge of budgeting
  • Have excellent team work skills
