SJRCS is seeking a Middle School Language Arts Teacher for the 2023-2024 school year to teach 5th and 6th grade English (whole class instruction) and 5th and 6th grade literature (small group instruction), along with serving as 6th grade homeroom teacher. The MS L.A. Teacher reports to the principal and assistant principal while being an integral part of the middle school faculty team serving in an advisory capacity to the administration for the school’s policies, philosophy, organization, and curriculum.

Plan for instruction with logically sequenced objectives based on the curriculum standards of the Archdiocese of Washington. The English curriculum utilizes Loyola Press Voyages in English and Wordly Wise. Literature is taught utilizing a novel-based approach while exploring the main literary elements of theme, plot, character development, and vocabulary.
Collaborate with the 7th and 8th grade L.A. teacher to establish a consistent foundation for learning to (1) write clearly and concisely, and (2) read comprehensively and analytically. The teacher will plan and submit weekly lesson plans according to the school policies.
Provide appropriate material and resources, both in print and digitally, for students of all learning levels to access and engage in learning. The teacher will utilize Google Classroom and other software applications such as IXL and Learning Ally.
Review and adopt accommodations specified for students with CAPs or other learning plans. The teacher will collaborate with the resource teacher to ensure the success of resource students.
Use varied assessment tools, both in print and digitally, to perform frequent formative and summative assessments. The teacher will schedule, supervise, and proctor makeup tests and classwork.
Maintain grades for homework, classwork, essays, projects, quizzes, and tests. The teacher will post grades on the school’s grading platform every two weeks.
Schedule, supervise, and proctor standardized testing three times per school year in accordance with ADW practices.
Practice positive, consistent discipline in the management of the language arts classroom and the 6th grade homeroom.
Plan, schedule, supervise, and attend the main 6th grade overnight field trip, Outdoor Ed.
Communicate with parents regarding academic, behavioral, social, and safety concerns.
Attend weekly faculty and team meetings. The teacher will attend school functions outside of the school day as required by the Faculty Handbook.
Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church.
Knowledge of subjects taught, instructional methods and strategies, and curriculum differentiation. The teacher will have strong writing skills and be widely read within the middle school grade levels.
Knowledge of child development, learning, and behavior specific to middle school grade levels. The teacher will have the ability to manage student behavior in the classroom setting and in the homeroom setting.
Skill in pacing and differentiating instruction. The teacher will have the ability to respond to individual learning needs.
Skill in motivating and engaging students in the learning process. The teacher will have the ability to demonstrate gains in student performance that are in keeping with school goals.
Skill in collaborating with peers to enhance the work environment and support instructional planning across the curriculum and across the four grade levels of SJRCS middle school.
Ability to conference with parents upon request and respond to voice mail messages and email in a timely manner.
Bachelor's degree in Education with 18 hours in English or related field preferred; BA or BS four-year degree required.
At least 12 hours in education courses and a valid MSDE teaching certificate preferred; obligation to become certified by MSDE within three (3) years of date of hire required.
Experience: None required, however, full-time classroom teaching experience in the content area and grade level preferred.
