Job Description

Job Title:  Theology Teacher

Reports to:  Principal

 

Position Summary: The Theology Teacher at Boylan Catholic High School plays a pivotal role in fostering a comprehensive and engaging learning environment within the framework of Catholic values. Responsible for instructing students in various disciplines, the teacher is expected to impart a strong foundation while integrating moral and ethical considerations in the teaching approach.  The Theology Teacher imparts knowledge on religious studies and offers the students the opportunity to grow in relationship with the person of Jesus Christ and His Church.



Areas of Responsibility: 

  • The essential role of the Catholic school teacher is to witness the Gospel message and to lead students to reflect on a Christian approach to life while building the faith community. 

  • A teacher should provide students the opportunities to develop their gifts as peacemakers and stewards for the service of the world community. 

  • Designing, developing, and delivering quality lesson plans and curricula that adhere to the U.S. Bishop's doctrine framework for high school catechists.

  • Deliver high-quality, engaging instruction in the form of discussion, direct teaching, demonstrations, and independent practice using a variety of proven methods.

  • Differentiate lessons when needed to give all students access to the curriculum regardless of disability, instructional level, English proficiency or level of interest in the subject.

  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church  

  • Provides appropriate material and resources for students to engage in learning  

  • Uses effective instructional methods/models according to professional standard practice  

  • Uses varied assessment tools to perform both formative and summative assessments  

  • Communicate with parents regarding academic, behavioral, or safety concerns  

  • Develops students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility and social skills; provides a safe and optimal learning environment; and appropriate feedback regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required.

  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Maintain a safe, orderly and supportive classroom by modeling expected behavior and standards, promoting positive interactions and quickly addressing behaviors that are not in line with the school discipline plan.

  • Improve skills and knowledge in teaching by regularly taking classes, attending workshops and discovering new methods of delivering exciting content to students.

  • Work with school administration to develop curriculum, revise school policies, and implement new technology.

  • Assist with initiatives and activities within the school such as standardized testing, class-level presentations and course forecasting. 

  • Exercise effective classroom management with the use of fair and consistent standards and appropriate sanctions that are clearly articulated to the students.

  • Accompany students by inviting them to ask questions, to express their joys and challenges, to seek understanding and sharing your faith journey

  • Collaborate with other department members and grade-level teachers to innovate and nurture an excellent culture of teaching and learning.

  • Actively participate in the life of the school outside of the classroom, e.g. retreats, mission trips, service programs, and other co-curriculars.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church 

  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation about performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

  • Ability to work with colleagues to design and teach multi-disciplinary courses

  • The ability to answer sensitive questions and create an environment where everyone’s opinions are respected.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level is preferred.

  • A practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church

  • Understand, embrace, and be able to articulate the mission and vision of Boylan Catholic High School.
