The mission of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of this mission, the Archdiocese of Washington is hiring a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO will provide financial counsel directly to the Archbishop, while reporting to the Moderator of the Curia, and will manage all financial functions and staff in the Archdiocesan finance office.
The CFO is responsible for managing all aspects of financial matters for the Central Pastoral Administration of the Archdiocese of Washington, including budgeting, accounting, banking and investments, financial-related corporate compliance, the Archdiocesan insurance program, and the parish and schools finance department. The CFO is also responsible for the financial reporting and stewardship of investments, management of Archdiocesan trusts, retirement and benefits programs, and other financial programs, and extensive collaboration with affiliated corporations, foundations, parishes and schools, and other Archdiocesan ministries to ensure adherence to Archdiocesan financial policies and pursuit of the overall mission of the Church in Washington.
Duties & Responsibilities
· Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization's fiscal function and performance. Implement and ensure there is a strong system of internal controls in place.
· Manage and plan the external audit of the organization as well as the relationships with the external auditors.
· Provide strategic financial input, leadership and advice on issues affecting the organization and affiliates.
· Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action.
· Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends to assist the Archbishop, governing boards, and other senior executives in meeting their responsibilities.
· Enhance and/or develop, implement, and enforce financial policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness.
· Establish credibility throughout the organization and with governing boards as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
· Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within the financial discipline.
· Provide oversight of the risk management and commercial and benefits insurance functions and programs.
· Ensure sound budgeting process through education of department managers on financial issues impacting department budgets.
· Analyze and propose organization-wide credit needs, negotiate and manage credit, banking and investment relationships with appropriate providers.
· Provide reliable cash flow projections and reporting mechanisms.
· Be an advisor from the financial and risk perspective on any significant contracts into which the corporation may enter.
· Advise in the negotiation and management of real estate transactions and large construction projects.
· Oversee and advise in the implementation, development, and maintenance of finance and accounting systems. .
· Evaluate the finance and management teams’ structure and plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group as well as provide individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on opportunities (where possible) for individuals.
· Supervise Executive Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, Executive Director of Accounting, and Executive Director of Parish and School Financial Operations.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
· Incumbent must be a practicing Catholic in good standing and who supports the teachings of the Catholic Church, including an in-depth familiarity with its structures, functions, hierarchy and institutions.
· Excellent communication skills.
· Proactive and willing to think “outside the box.”
· Ability to work with highly confidential data and financial information.
Required Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or a related field.
· 10 to 15 years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education required.
· CPA preferred, MBA, a plus.
· Financial Management experience.
· Proven senior leadership experience, willing to work with and help to grow and mentor staff.
· Experience in the not-for-profit environment (example: Catholic Church or University setting) a plus.
· Strategic planning experience required.
· Technical accounting skills.

· This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
· Regular full-time employee (40 hours/week); this is an in-office position; Hybrid schedule offered (4 days in the office and one day remote).
