Job Description

As the Lumen Christi Institute enters into its third decade of offering programs, it is preparing for significant growth. It has become a major pilot project for the renewal of the Catholic presence in higher education, through its core program at the University of Chicago, its conferences with bishops and economists on Catholic Social Thought, its intensive summer seminars, and its success inspiring and catalyzing the creation of similar centers.

The Senior Director of Development and Principal Gifts is a critical piece of that growth plan as new benefactors must be engaged and existing benefactors cultivated to increased support. Lumen Christi is actively seeking an individual that will be able to prepare for and successfully complete a capital campaign of at least $10M in the next 2-5 years. This will require strategic planning and a focus on conducting qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship visits with men and women of affluence and influence both in the Greater Chicago area and nationally.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage relationships with approximately 75+ active and prospective benefactors.
  • Secure sufficient annual gifts to help sustain and grow the program as well as manage a portfolio of individuals and family foundations capable to supporting a $10M+ campaign effort.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy for engaging, cultivating, soliciting and retaining individual benefactors to the Lumen Christi Institute
  • Lead and manage a development team of two full-time and two half-time employees as well as support and direct the Executive Director in fundraising and cultivation efforts
  • Hire and train new staff to build on the success of a renewed development effort.
  • Create and manage regular stewardship reports and communication updates to the Lumen Christi Institute Board of Directors and benefactors
  • Travel within the Greater Chicago area and throughout the United States for face-to-face meetings with benefactors
  • Assist in keeping records and files related to major benefactors and family foundations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of five (5) years professional fundraising experience with a proven track record of engaging and cultivating benefactors and prospective benefactors
  • Be a practicing Catholic in good standing who sees the work of the Lumen Christi Institute as essential to the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills as well as written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and simultaneously juggle multiple priorities with competing deadlines
  • Commitment to meetings out of the office in the Chicagoland area 40% of the time and quarterly trips outside of Illinois.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Lumen Christi Institute
  • Experience working with a religiously based organization or in higher education
  • Experience in a small non profit organization or office
  • Experience working on a capital campaign, specifically a campaign including an endowment goal
  • Experience working with databases, specifically Raiser’s Edge or Raiser’s Edge NXT
