Dimitri Arnauts (°1973) is a composer who has dedicated himself to uplift and delight hearts, souls and minds through the reaffirmed beauty of melody, harmony, polyphony and counterpoint, and through the innumerable colors of instruments and human voices.
Born in 1973 in Brussels, Dimitri turns 46 this year and lives near the capital of Belgium.
After humanities in Woluwé-St-Pierre, with a focus on ancient Greek and mathematics, and while following music theory, reading and violin classes with Pr. Juri Braginski at the local music academy, he enjoyed choral practice in the school choir leaded by Egide Vissenaekens.
He started his higher education at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 1989, at the faculty of applied sciences, aiming to become an Engineer-Architect. Meanwhile he discovered, the vocal music of Johann Sebastian Bach through his major masterpiece, the Mass in B Minor, (tenor voice) performing it several times with the University Choir of the UCL-Clerlande under the direction of Pr. Dr. Philippe Mercier, both in Belgium and abroad (Paris, Madeleine Church, etc...).
This experience was for him a milestone: in 1994 he decided to definitively quit his architecture and engineering plans, and he started as an autodidact to learn and practice music writing.
After a brief participation in the former Choir and Orchestra Aurora Nova leaded by S.Feye, he embarked on a journey with the Choir of the Chapelle des Minimes in Brussels: singing 2 or more Bach cantatas each month during seven years, under the direction of J.Vanherenthals mainly. He has thus performed around 140 Bach cantatas as a tenor / baryton chorister, as well as the two Bach passions, Christmas, Easter and Ascension Oratorios, etc...
From 2004 on Dimitri could dedicate more time to compose music, and has since written numerous works of various sizes and settings, being mainly cantatas, psalms, oratorios, concertos, symphonies and symphonic poems, and other vocal or orchestral works.
As an autodidact, Dimitri feels free to follow the paths of his heart, both in the aesthetics of his music as in the emotion and message it aims to convey. He does his work to the best of his abilities, in recognition of received graces and gifts, having nothing in sight but the elevation of the spirit, the delight of the soul and the enchantment of the heart.
Loving to be at the humble service of Goodness, Truth and Beauty - and bearing this service and testimony with joy and gratefulness towards the Creator - he established from the very beginning the foundations of his musical art on the Western tradition of tonal harmony, euphony, complex polyphony, fugue and counterpoint.
This science of the art of music writing, he wanted to rediscover it for himself and learn it in an autonomous manner: without theoretical study or academic recipe-books that would have him ending up fixed, dried out and losing his path to peer pressure... instead, by following only the voice of his heart, the means and visions of intuition, the desire of his soul and the capabilities of his spirit.
Musically, Dimitri Arnauts admits humbly and gladly to be a modest and indebted disciple of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, at whose service he had the privilege to be moved, formed and inspired - through a year-long vocal practice of his Cantatas, Passions, Oratorios as a chorister.
His first concert contribution as a composer occurred in June 2012, when an excerpt of his tone setting of Psalm 100 (11') was performed by the Choir and Orchestra of the Chapelle des Minimes in Brussels, under the direction of J.Stenzel. In 2018 he conducted the premiere of his 'Requiem Sancti Michaelis' (msatb+orchestra, 50') at St.-Catherine Church, in Duisburg, Belgium. In May of the same year, his four-hands piano suite 'Humble Memories' was premiered at BOZAR, Brussels, on the new Maene-Barenboim straight-strung piano.
He also completed that year choral and orchestral conducting courses, in Oxford, UK (James Jordan and Steve Pilkington, USA) and in Sherborne, UK (with Maestro Rodolfo Saglimbeni, Venezuela and Amy Bebbington, UK), and film music composition courses at the HKU Utrecht, The Netherlands (with Rens Machielse).
He has also been selected to participate in the first edition of the International Masterclass ‘Sacred Music Today’ in Stockholm, Sweden, under the high patronage of the Lutheran Church of Sweden and the Pontifical Council for Culture of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed there the tuition of acclaimed choral conductors Gary Graden and Mikael Wedar.
The same year, his chamber music contribution to the international Flute Infinity project was premiered at the Slovacki Theatre in Krakow, Poland. This project resulted in a collective CD, issued by the DUX label, and proposed for nomination at the Polish Classical Music Awards by the label.
In 2019-2020, Dimitri held a position as Artistic and Choir Director of St-Cecilia's Choir at Saint-John-the-Evangelist Church in Tervuren, Belgium.
He has published sixteen LP albums of original music online, as well as 12 EP's and 54 Singles, comprising organ solo works, choral works, vocal improvisations, electronic six-part fantasies, piano and synthesizer musings, symphonic poems and two full-length concert movies, totaling about 30 hours of new music, as well as numerous creative art videos and music clips.
His music has been premiered, performed or recorded internationally in various places: Belgium (BOZAR Brussels, Duisburg), Poland (Slovacki Theater Krakow, Tokarnia), United Kingdom (Chester, London), Germany (Hamburg), Lebanon (Beirut), Austria (Vienna), USA (New York, Princeton, etc...)
In early 2020, four of his planned symphonic premieres were cancelled due to the COVID-2019 Crisis and ensuing international restrictions.
During this COVID-19 Confinement period, he composed and produced a set of music videos with new original soundtracks, in collaboration with several established or upcoming artists from the USA, Lebanon, Austria, Belgium, Japan, Poland, Angola, Puerto-Rico, Kenya and Hungary.
These video's - more precisely those made for tenor Nelson Ebo - were nominated for and awarded a High Commendation in the category 'Best Digital Project for a Musician' at the 2020 Classical Music Digital Awards in the United Kingdom.
His Art Song 'Civilization' has received the Special Award Ex Aequo for Best Direction at the 1º Concorso di Canto Lirico Virtuale SOI Scuola dell'Opera Italiana Fiorenza Cedolins (Italy) in May 2021.
Dimitri is also founding member of the international composer collective Muse11, and an active member of the Flemish Composers' Archipelago COMAV...

The Hallel Orchestra & Initiative is a nascent international cultural and artistic body that aims to operate for the benefit of Jewish cultural life, in a contribution to expanding and elevating its presence, significance and importance to the world stage of the Arts.
We want to revive, nourish, and embody the necessary dialogue between the diverse faith traditions and spiritual heritages of Humanity – in a spirit of non-concurrence and mutual respect, having the Jewish faith and legacy as our own starting point and source.
Numerous talented and dedicated musicians, to focus on the field of Music and performing arts, who have a Jewish background or who identify a Jewish, have participated at various levels to the highest achievements of civilizations across the world. However, few are the professional orchestral formations (except in Israel of course) that identify as expressively Jewish and who serve as a cultural ambassador and amplificator for the diaspora communities amongst the various nations where Jews are living.
We hope that the Orchestra enters a trajectory that leads itself to be a leading and reputed orchestra on the global music scene, which welcomes people from the Jewish community around the world, and puts the community musically on the map in an original, characteristic and highly qualitative way.
The Hallel Orchestra will not be or become a religious, nor political organization and does not align itself with any movement in particular. It will stay an independent artistic body that welcomes anyone from any faiths to be a part of the Orchestra, however, actively encourages and promotes talented musicians around the globe who identify as Jewish.
Pianist and Conductor Josh Nesbitt, co-founder of the project, will be its Principal Conductor.

Listed as composer in the Catholic Artists Directory | Traditional Sacred Art Today
Grounded in the treasures of our multi-secular tradition and practice but also looking boldly forward to the future, my aim as a composer and founder of this new ensemble, is to contribute in reviving the fruitful relation between Art, Community and Faith.
Therefore, the ADFONTES consort of Music (former Clamavi Ensemble) is primarily dedicated to the creation of a substantial body of new qualitative music: exuberant or meditative concert psalms, festive musical masses, thematic oratorios and cantatas - on acute contemporary issues and for recognized good causes.
As a composer with a predilection for euphonic tonal harmony, melody, sacred polyphony, fugue and counterpoint, I want to invite (christian) musicians an inspiring, thrilling and original artistic challenge and adventure: bringing the tradition of the sacred cantata and oratorio back to life through exciting thematic concerts, as well as in a real liturgical context.
The ADFONTES Consort of Music ensemble calls thus for able, motivated and talented professional singers, soloists and instrumentalists - with skills ranging from talented conservatory students to seasoned professionals with soloist abilities – who have the desire to foster, ignite and embody a real renaissance of sacred music!

Monthly Bach Cantata project: (-/+140 cantatas performed personally as tenor)
Since October 1981, la Chapelle des Minimes has been performing one or two Bach cantatas every month to a large and appreciative audience in the Minimes Church in central Brussels.
The original idea of a monthly cantata concert in Brussels drew its inspiration from Bach’s weekly duty of furnishing a cantata for the St Thomas church in Leipzig. Bach’s cantatas were written to support and enhance the Sunday religious service.
Likewise, the programmes of our concerts closely follow the liturgical season.
La Chapelle des Minimes has performed the following works by J.S. Bach:
Design and maintenance of the Website and programmation updates, promotion of concerts
Chapelle des Minimes - Kapel van de Miniemen - Chapel of the Minims - Kapel der Miniemen
Participation after selection to the "BACH - We Are FAMILY" Choir 2022 - the International Festival Choir of the BachFest Leipzig 2022. The leadership of the project choir will be in the hands of our president, Ton Koopman.
The programme:
Programme
J. S. Bach: Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein, BWV 128
J. S. Bach: Gelobet sei der Herr, mein Gott, BWV 129
Artists
Viola Blache (soprano), Elvira Bill (alto), Patrick Grahl (tenor), Tobias Berndt (bass), "BACH - We Are FAMILY" Choir (Philipp Goldmann, rehearsal);

"Dimitri Arnauts participated in my workshop Composing Film Music for Beginners of the Utrecht Summerschool 2018. I experienced Dimitri as a skilled and professional composer who is able to create a musical world of its own. A composer who can 'translate' emotions into music using imaginative sounds, harmonies and melodies. All in all, it was a fascinating experience to witness his compositional talent! "

"Dimitri and I worked together for several years, in a marketing team (he is a talented graphic designer) but it was clear to all of us that music was his first love and he would one day pursue a career in composing. During our time together he wrote a wonderful piece for a charity we were supporting in Uganda, depicting different aspects of African rural life with sensitivity wit and lyrical beauty. Whoever gets to work with Dimitri will indeed be fortunate and I commend him warmly as a kind and generous colleague and an outstanding composer. "

"Dimitri is an intelligent, highly skilled, and creative musician with an depth of experience in the religious musical sphere, where his choral works have taken his career to a new height. He has worked with many esteemed conductors and orchestras to premiere his works and has a very vibrant network of colleagues, He is also an extraordinary businessman as well as web designer and is able to blend and fuse both worlds of his professional career together, showcasing this in the beautifully polished music videos he produces. I am very keen and excited to start this new venture, the "Hallel Orchestra" alongside him. "

Musicologist at the University of Amsterdam / Federation of Artists' Associations, artistic programmer in Popcentrum Paradiso, staff member of musical education at Holland Symfonia NPO and reviewer / critic at the Groene Amsterdammer
"My first encounter with the music of Dimitri Arnauts was a special sensation. We had known each other for some time, without knowing his musical potential and ambition. I unexpectedly listened to the early music of his hand, he had just started composing without any background from a classical conservatory study, sailing on thorough self-study and a great passion for music (initially mainly with a religious background).
I unexpectedly heard a wealth of atmosphere and sound that immediately made an impression, sometimes almost too good to be true! Later I understood that this was partly achieved by modern composing tools then unknown to me such as the CAM, Computer Aided Music environment and the DAW, the Digital Audio Workstation. A new world opened up for me!
Meanwhile, Dimitri continued to develop at a rapid pace through workshops and self-study, but also as conductor of a choir and through other inspiring contacts and relationships.
His compositions bear witness to an innate musicality and are almost always atmospheric and sound-rich, which may create associations with film music and other illustrative music types. In that respect it is not surprising that Dimitri, as a truly artistic multi-talent, single-handedly enriches many compositions with well-found visual images and video trailers that enhance the music wonderfully.
I have known few people in my life who are so obsessed with music and who were also so eager to make progress.
Last but not least, you will find in Dimitri a very sensitive and sociable person with a sympathetic appearance. And that is a pleasant aspect in this over-polarized world!"
