Humanities Teacher
Job Description: This is a full time, exempt position with an August- July work schedule (185 days). Base standard hours will be 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM on days designated by the school calendar. The teacher will be responsible for the direct instruction of two sections of Rhetoric, Freshman Ancient Literature and Senior Modern Literature.
Position Narrative: The Humanities teacher will plan, organize, and implement an appropriate curriculum and instructional program based upon student instruction and assessments that guides students to learn, grow and advance to fulfill their academic potential. A teacher is expected to model the habits of intellectual inquiry, moral excellence, self-governance, and civic involvement and display the five virtues of courage, courtesy, truthfulness, prudence, and perseverance. Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver content-rich instruction grounded in the school’s classical, liberal arts curriculum and the Hillsdale K–12 philosophy, using clear, explicit direct instruction to build mastery.
- Establish and maintain high academic and behavioral expectations that support focused study, strong intellectual habits, and moral development.
- Use frequent checks for understanding, formative assessments, and performance tasks to monitor mastery and provide timely feedback.
- Provide all classroom accommodations as outlined in student educational plans.
- Actively monitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, and school spaces to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
- Maintain accurate academic and administrative records, including progress reports, in accordance with legal and school requirements.
- Manage classroom materials, textbooks, and supplies to support rigorous, organized instruction.
- Model the school’s core virtues and moral principles in all interactions, and employ effective classroom management and conflict resolution strategies.
- Communicate openly and respectfully with families, colleagues, and administrators, and collaborate with faculty to ensure consistent curriculum delivery.
- Engage in ongoing professional development related to classical education, direct-instruction pedagogy, and subject-specific expertise.
- Demonstrate professional integrity, ethical conduct, and leadership, maintaining a positive, solution-oriented approach to challenges.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission and smooth operation of the school.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Classical Studies, Liberal Arts, Western Civilization, or Great Books related field (Master’s Degree preferred)
- Teaching: Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of a classical liberal-arts education
- Ability to create lesson plans, deliver content-rich curriculum, and manage a classroom conducive to learning
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree from Hillsdale College
- Previous classroom teaching experience, especially in classical schools or classical programs
- Familiarity with Hillsdale’s curricula and teaching methodology
- Experience mentoring students in character development and civic virtue
